Why is my dad so stubborn?

My dad like puts off everything until someone crazy happens. For example, a tire on our car was bad. I told him its wobbling change it change it. Next thing you know the tire goes to **** and it eventually is replaced. A new set of Michellens. However the hub bearings went out because of this. The inner tie rods got screwed up, and now the cv joint boot ripped and is pouring grease. I am asking him to let me buy the tie rods (inner and outer both sides) for $37 (good deal). He is telling me (they don't need to be replaced).Even though the dealer told us they needed to be replaced when we went for a recall repair (i know they are thieves but the car has alot of mileage and a tie rod replacement shouldn't sound odd) He is telling me I AM NOT PUTTING ANY MORE MONEY IN THAT CAR (even though i have done all of the repairs and this is our primary car) he speaks as though we have another set of brand new cars. Why are some people so stubborn like this? How can i convince him?Why is my dad so stubborn?
some people just don't care and as long as it's still running that's all they care about, he doesn't like to be told by his kid these things, shame on him!Why is my dad so stubborn?
My dad is almost 70 and is still like that.

I envy him in a way since I am so anal about my vehicles.

There has to be a happy medium. Why is my dad so stubborn?
some people don't like to fix things until it's really broke... in your case, it's a safety issue, what if the tie rod pops off and you hit someone? or worse... kill someone! get it fixed or don't drive it.... plain and simple......and just my 2 cents, most dealers are not thieves, but I know there are some.

p/s. the tie rods can fall off even if your not off road...worry about them!

good luck! Why is my dad so stubborn?
You can't. Did you ever stop and think that maybe he does not have the extra money to put into the car right now? $37 might not seem like too much, but after paying the monthly bills, that little bit could be the difference between having a nice dinner once a month and eating top ramen for a few nights. A set of 4 tires is expensive and has to be budgeted into most households budgets. Just one tire for my truck (primary tow vehicle) cost $319 plus mount and balance. It is close to $1500 when I need new tires! I do all my own work on my vehicles and sometimes have to put off fixing wear parts for a while.

Tie rods take a lot of abuse before they break. I have replaced many worn tie rods in my time and have only seen them break in off road applications.

I would not worry about it too much, but if you are worried, find a way to earn some extra money and buy them for him.Why is my dad so stubborn?
my 2 cents, grab a tool set and start learning. Why is my dad so stubborn?
If it's his car, it's his business. Why is my dad so stubborn?
You need to get the point across to him that driving this car is unsafe. If and when the tie rod lets go, he will lose control of the steering on the car and can cause an accident not only to personal property but to an innocent bystander as well. A lot of the older generation are very stubborn when it comes to putting hard earned money into a car. Either they have the money and refuse to part with it or they dont have the money and they can barely pay for necessities. Look at the car as a luxury and not a necessity. It is a means of transportation to him no more no less. You have your hands full, but if you and the rest of your family refuses to go in the car until it is fixed, then maybe just maybe you will get your point across. Also try to let him know that those Michelins are not the cheapest of tires and driving with worn tie rods will wear them out much quicker and this will be wasting his money on tires. Try what ever you have to, but i would not go in that car with him until he repairs the safety and integrity of this car.

good luck......

Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?

So, my car has been vibrating really badly when I turn my steering wheel to the left whenever I'm driving around a curve and it does it whenever I'm speeding up too. I took it to the dealership today to get my oil changed and they said my passenger side outer tie rod was bad and so was my driver sider hub bearing. I replaced the tie rod today (the outer one) and the clicking noise I hear when I turn my wheel has decreased but not completely gone and it still vibrates whenever I turn. How badly is my wheel bearing wore out? How long will it last? I'm supposed to get it done Thurs but I'm scared it's something more than the wheel bearing. Help!Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?
Ok, first off I'd be a bit skeptical about a wheel bearing for 60 bucks. The wheel bearing for your car is a whole hub assembly, so unless they are going to press the bearing out and press in a new one (about an hour labor with a hydraulic press so $20 to put it on seems cheap now) that sounds like a cheap assembly. Depending on the braking systems of your car (4 wheel ABS or 2 wheel ABS) the hubs cost about $168 from NAPA. As far as the problems is concerned, if the problem was with the drivers side bearing then you would notice it turning to the right; all the weight shifts to the opposite side when turning. Like others to answer, I would have them check the tulip (CV) joints in the CV shaft on the passengers side. As far as safety is concerned, if the bearing does seize up while you are driving that can cause the car to pull in the direction of the seizure so if you are not ready for it you can swerve pretty bad in that direction. I've seen bad bearing last for 2 days after making noise and I've seen them last for 6 months...it's really a crap shoot.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?
Sounds more like CV joints to me.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?
could be a CV joint..if you can't afford a car, don't drive one...everything needs maintenance.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?
Why didn't you have them do the bearing while you were there? Then you would know.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?
This happened to my 2003 Impala last year. I drove on it for maybe two days after I noticed the vibrating. grinding whenever I sped up or turned and my dad told me that I shouldn't have so I would guess you should do it pretty quick, I think it was like $110. My car mainly did it when I was going fast.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?
It's hard to say...the ball bearings in these American cars suck...my friend has a Cavalier and has had bearings go bad in two different front wheels. The first time he drove around in it like that for a month or two, lol, then it got real bad (loud). So it can last a while but it depends on how bad it is, the position, everything. Let it go too long and you will really **** it up so just be careful, drive it slow, and you should def last til Thursday. Just make sure you get it taken care of then and don't delay it further.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?
CV to meWheel bearing? 2000 Impala?
Good deal on a bearing... cheap to put on.... what the hey. It's not like that hub assembly holds your wheel on or anything... go cheap. That's definately the best idea....Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?
it could be the cv joint or the wheel bearing.

How do I tell whether my tie-end rods are loose or worn?

I have a '94 eagle vision, the driver's side wheel vibrates/woobles at high speed, and also upon hard braking. I recently changed out the brake pads, but I don't believe that should have anything to do with. Do I just need an alignment or wheel balance?? When the car is jacked up, I am able to move the wheel in and out if I grab the top and bottom. I'm not sure if it's the tie-end rods or the ball joints??? I want to do the job myself and just get it aligned afterwards. My driver's side tire has also began %26quot;cupping%26quot; like a formation of a slight bulge on the outer side of the wheel. Please help...How do I tell whether my tie-end rods are loose or worn?
This definitely sounds like worn tie rod ends. The vibrations and free play of the wheel are tell-tale signs, as well as the tire wear pattern. However, there may be other problems in addition to tie rod ends based on the symptoms you describe. The free play of the wheel could also be worn bearings on that particular wheel. And the vibrations upon hard braking could indicate warped brake rotors as well.

Start with the tie rod ends, but you might end up doing additional repairs. How do I tell whether my tie-end rods are loose or worn?
if your tie rods are worn ,with one wheel jacked up,if you place your hands at

3:00 oclock and 9:00 oclock on your tire

and there is play.

if your ball joints are worn, with one wheel jacked up place your hands at 12:00 and 6:00 and there is play.

pushing back and forth on the tire

at those points.

now if your upper or lower table is worn

your into big tame cash payment to get fixed. How do I tell whether my tie-end rods are loose or worn?
Jack up the front end (always be safe, use jackstands do not rely on the floorjack) shake things , see if you can squeeze the tie rods, if you can squeeze them with your hands or applying slight pressure with some pliers. Use a bar to move the tire up and down and check for movement at ball joints CHeck wheel bearings by moving the tire left-to right or up-down ( with the steering wheel locked in)

Who can fix an old bmw 540i suspension in the dc/va/md area?

I have a 10 yr old 540i with high miles and would like to spend as little as possible to get basic suspension work done .. i live in dc metro area .. pls recommend an indy mechanic and or shop that can do this .. it looks like this is a basic job and doesn't need a bmw specialist .. correct?

how much should i expect to pay for labor to change the front/rear struts/shocks and also the front control arms/bushings and tie rod assembly (purchased kit from fcp groton on ebay)Who can fix an old bmw 540i suspension in the dc/va/md area?
You might as well make a downpayment towards a new BMW because you're looking at least a couple of thousand in labor alone plus the parts.Who can fix an old bmw 540i suspension in the dc/va/md area?
You need to look in your local yellow pages. Once you locate some options there, you can call the phone numbers listed under their ads. When someone answers, ask them how much they would charge you for this or for their labor rate and do some comparative shopping because I always quote the price of $300,000 for every %26quot;How much should it cost me%26quot; question someone asks on Yahoo. If you have to ask that question, ask the person from whom you are looking to do the work.

Wanting to sell a 1991 Plymouth Voyager LE how much do you think it'll go for?

I have a 1991 Plymouth Voyager LE with 166,000 miles on the boy and unkown on the engine(It's been replaced once). The Transmission has two clutches and the shift recoil going out. Plust the Engine control module is shorting. I have put in a new autinator, new tie rod ends, new ball joints, a new battery, the engine purrs like a kitten but with the two clutches and the recoil it jerks whenever changing into 2nd and Overdrive(it has a 3 speed auto with Overdrive) The engine is a 3.3 Liter V6. IF these run perfect they are worth about 800-1000. Yours needs a $1500.00 transmission overhaul. It is worth ZERO. You might be able to find a mechanic to give you a hundred bucks for it if he wants to fix it himself...Looks like you used it all up! All the replacement parts you put on were replacements of worn out parts. They ADD no value to the vehicle. My suggestion if you have the space is to go buy another one yourself for about $1500 bucks that is REALLY nice...and take all the good parts off this one, put them in a box in the garage, and send the rest of it to the junkyard! Good luck!Wanting to sell a 1991 Plymouth Voyager LE how much do you think it%26039;ll go for?

sell it yourself, but add some saw dust to the transmission, it will silence any noises from the tranny, and you might actually get away with it. if you got 800 for it i think you would be doing good. if the ecu is going out that cars days are numbered. you might just want to think about parting it out. you could probbaly get $1500 for parts and then sell it to a junk yard for $50 bucks. if your state has a lemon law then they can come back and demand the money they paid. its a tough call...Wanting to sell a 1991 Plymouth Voyager LE how much do you think it%26039;ll go for?
I can see that you like to get your use out of your vehicles! Nobody wants to buy a car with a bad tranny unless they have a car with a bad engine and a good tranny. You might do better to try to find one of these! Just remember, you don't know how many miles are on their tranny, just like no one really knows how much longer your motor has before it hits the skids. Honestly, your car is not worth much of anything. Count your blessings for getting the life that you got out of it! Ask yourself %26quot;Would I buy a 1991 ANYTHING with 166,000 miles on it?%26quot; And then, what would you pay for it, with a bad tranny? Remember your answers because when you see the guy with the Voyager that has the good tranny and bad motor, his is worth just as much as yours. Don't pay one penny more!Wanting to sell a 1991 Plymouth Voyager LE how much do you think it%26039;ll go for?

  • Can I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?

I just got my oil changed today and found out my 97 Ford Escort needs about (according to their estimate) $700 worth of work, including fixing a broken Sway Bar Link, replacing two loose Outer TIE Rod ends, and replacement of rusted cooling lines for my transmission - in addition to the alignment and transmission flush that will need to be done along with all of it.

Unfortunetly - being a college student and all, and at the moment looking for summer employment, I simply don't have $700+ dollars; so I'm trying to prioritize on what needs to be fixed and what can wait. Add to this that I know very little about cars and how they work.

The shop told me the TIE rods were a priority, and from what I've researched I agree. The cooling lines were listed as 'may need future attention' but to avoid future issues I think this is second on the 'fix' list. Does anyone know if a broken Sway Bar can wait a while - or is it more then just an inconvience?

Thanks! Can I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?
If you are not very mechanically inclined , you need to get a couple more opinions from reliable and honest mechanics as to whether you need any of this work . My escort has stainless steel transmission cooling lines and they don't rust . If you have worn tie rod ends you need to replace them promptly before one comes aloose , and you don't have any steering . The sway bar can wait , but your handling may suffer a little .Can I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?

The sway bar should just affect your steering. You'll just have to take it easy around the turns....... Fix it when you can. A lot of people take their sway bars off to drop weight, when they drag race. Can I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?

i do not know where u r ,but that is way off .they r taken u for the money.. u need to call around for prices, but do not say what u have for prices now. there r cheaper garages out thereCan I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?
The cost does sound a little high. I would shop around. Being in College you can take it to the Mechanic class and have most of the work if not all done for little or no cost but for the parts only. They get to learn how to work on the car you get the work done for free. They will not try to cheat you out of money for repairs not needed. Can I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?
let me guess. you had your oil changed at either firestone, goodyear, or one of the specialty shops where they change your oil and then come out and tell you that you need all of this work done. if you did, go someplace else like a garage and ask THEM%26gt; best to check again. been there, done that. but DO pay attention to tie rod ends. bad ones can be dangerous. Can I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?
You need to think safety. The components you have just described are vital to your front end. If you don't have the money then ask for a loan from your family. I know I don't like asking for money either but we are talking about what would be worse. getting the car fixed and paying someone back or having a serious accident and causing maybe someone else harm. This is serious!! my friend. You may loose control of the car. So do the right thing. Can't fix it then don't frive it.Can I drive my Escort without fixing the Sway Bar?
The order you have come up with is the right one. As far as the sway bar link goes, without it the car will lean more in corners/offramps. If you are not an aggresive driver that loves to take corners at high speed then the link can wait for a LONG time with out problems.

Car problems 1996 ford escort is my car cursed? i need advice?

i bought this car 2 years ago with 78,000 miles on it. the car now has 101,000 miles on it. in that amount of time ive had to have the following problems in order fixed some of them may be related. My uncle did some of the work on this car so its less expensive the normal and i dont remeber exactly how much everything cost but ive put atleast $2325 in maintenence into this car since ive bought it.($3825 with work that needs to be done now) 1. timing belt had to be replaced (about $400? it was a long time ago) 2. spark plug wires had to be replaced(aprox.$100) engine ran on 3 cylinders and caused 4. engine had to be replaced (atleast $1400) 5. somekind of vacuum tube/line problem(aprox.$100) 6. tie rods had to be changed(aprox.$200) caused- 7 two tires which i purchased when it got the car were worn down had to be replaced($125) which led to my uncle noticing the bad tie rods 8. transmission has to be replaced. (1500). Is my car cursed or would this be my last major problem 4 a while?Car problems 1996 ford escort is my car cursed? i need advice?
You pretty much covered it all, except for the water pump exploding at any given moment, a roller lifter locking up and wiping out the cam, canister purge solenoid malfunction, transmission problems from the 4EAT, and I hope you installed new timing belt idler pulleys and tensioner when that was replaced or you will have problems later. 150,000 miles is the best I have seen from the 2.0 liter SPI engine. After that it falls to pieces and drops valve seats and looses compression, etc. If it is running, and you want something else, get rid of it now, while it is still running. Just a thought. They are good cars, but fall apart after 150,000 miles.Car problems 1996 ford escort is my car cursed? i need advice?
sounds to me like you need a new car,but i see you got so much money in it that it wouldnt pay you to get rid of it now.Car problems 1996 ford escort is my car cursed? i need advice?
Hmm. the 96 Escort wasn't the best. They're not terrible, but Fords are notorious for weak tie rod ends. Drive it gently; no hard %26quot;the fast and the furious%26quot; cornering. Also, timing belts should be replaced every 60,000 miles, so you'll need to do that again in the near future. As far as making the engine and tranny last, keep them serviced, and drive it easily. I see people %26quot;driving it like they stole it%26quot; and that leads to blue smoke and big red Mercon fluid spots in the driveway. Good luck.Car problems 1996 ford escort is my car cursed? i need advice?
you got what i call a dollar you to death car. get rid of it take the loss and go on with your life.Car problems 1996 ford escort is my car cursed? i need advice?
You're not being cursed or neither your car is. The thing is that when you bought this car 2 years ago, you may not have carried out any repairs or replacement of parts but you carried on using it

until most of the problems occur. Now that you have to carry out

major repairs and replacements of parts to your car all at once,

it's draining on your finance and you feel the pinch.

Since you have done most of the major works, I would suggest

that you be patient and think positive, because things will be

fine with your car after the repairs.Car problems 1996 ford escort is my car cursed? i need advice?
No your car is not cursed. I have had 4 of these stupid things. They are cheap to buy. Thats the problem. You will always have problems with old cars. Once it costs you more then a car payment in maintance 2 or 3 months in a row its time to go.

Matter of fact i have an escort i will sell you. I put more money into that thing then you would imagine in one trip alone to the shop.Car problems 1996 ford escort is my car cursed? i need advice?
you've replaced just about everything that can go wrong with a car. i think you are in the clear now. Just keep checking your fluids and your tire treads. You should be fine

How do I change the lower ball joint on my 2000 Chevy Malibu?

The ball joint has gone on my 2000 Chevy Malibu (driver's side) due to the fact that my outer tie rod is also bad. (I know, I know) I want to fix both of them as soon as payday comes (tuesday). The problem that I am having is trying to figure out if my ball joint is pressed in or not. I don't want to buy the parts then find out I will need to take it to a garage to have it fixed because I don't have the tools to fix it with my trusty mechanics assistant. How do I change the lower ball joint on my 2000 Chevy Malibu?
The Auto Zone website has a free repair instruction site. You can get detailed step by step instructions for most repair procedures.

You will have to register. But registration is free. I have not received any SPAM from registering at this website.

See the second link below for detailed instructions to replace the front lower ball joint on this vehicle. Unsure if it will work without logging in.

I also own a 2000 Malibu and do all of my own maintenance and repairs. Bought it new and it now has over 140,000 relatively trouble free miles on it. i really got my moneys worth from this car.How do I change the lower ball joint on my 2000 Chevy Malibu?
Ball joints ... shudder... OK the sad truth is I have not had to change a ball joint in a few years but I do know chevy's .. from the factory these ball joints are riveted in place. not bolted. these means you will need to grind off the tops and beat them out with a punch and mallet. not a hammer you will be all day using a hammer. small sledge hammers will work. the other hard part is separating the wheel assembly from the ball joint. this usually takes a special tool called a ball joint separate. it is a 2 pronged piece of steel with a blunt end for beating on with a mallet.

once the old one is off the new one will come with bolts to bolt it in place. when you install the wheel assembly back on to the ball joint you will need a torque wrench. you will need to find the torque specs on these bolts to insure you do not over or under tighten them.

this is not an easy repair. it takes the right tools time and brute force.

    Tir rod ends help plz?

ok i took my car to a shop after my car got hit and the person took off they said i need inner and outer tie rod ends replace and of course a wheel alignment but the wanted like $900. i went out and bought all the parts and was gonna do it myself im only 17 so i figured it would be hard but i could do it....so i got the outer ones changed it took me like 4 hours then i go to do the inner ones and they dont wanna come off....i have a 1997 chevy lumiina ls how much would it coast to just get the inner ones done?Tir rod ends help plz?

    $Tir rod ends help plz?
Okay, do you have the right equipment? I just did all my tie rods.

    Two methods usually work.

    1) Heat the stud up with a propane torch for about 3 minutes, then hit that stud as hard as you can with a hammer, dead on.

    2) Buy a Tie Rod Separator Fork. $5 at any standard Lowes, Fleet Farm, Home Depot.... If you can't find it, you can rent one at Autozone / Advance Auto Parts for $30 (you get it returned when you return the tool).Tir rod ends help plz?
they,ll charge you about 35.00 a piece to do the inner ones, then the alignment, but you saved a little on the two that you already did, good luck.Tir rod ends help plz?
When you tried removing the inner tie rods, were you using the correct tool? There is a tool specially made to remove inner tie rods from the rack and pinion. If you weren't using that, maybe that's why you weren't able to take 'em off. As far as labor to replace them, prices vary among mechanics. One thing's fo sho, you wanna price around.Tir rod ends help plz?
There's a problem here: if other front end components were damaged in the crash (such as control arms, balljoints, and whatnot), you might have a hard time removing/installing parts under there.

Your best bet is to price around at several independent shops. Hopefully they don't find that other parts need replacing as well.

Popping noise when turning steering wheel?

I have a 2000 chevy monte carlo and when I turn the steering wheel either way. I recently did an oil change on it and inspected the front end. Tie rods, bushing, hubs all check out o.k. Could this be a cv axle problem, and if so how do I tell which one it is, or do both have to be replaced.Popping noise when turning steering wheel?
sounds like CV joints-read about them here(ARTICLES) http://painintheexhaust.blogspot.com/Popping noise when turning steering wheel?
probably the cv's.its best to change both at the same time so you dont have a strong new one and a weak old one.Popping noise when turning steering wheel?
    BALL-JOINTS and C-V Joints!

It's under the axle. and you can hear and feel the pop on one side or the other or both.

Know how you see someones car in the middle of the street with one tire swinging out in the WRONG direction. That person kept on driving. Didn't get it fixed. Park it, at home until you can get it fixed OR it will park itself in the middle of the street.

First thing I had done on my %26quot;Pretty Audi%26quot; and that's it Just pretty.Popping noise when turning steering wheel?
CV joint. An inspection would give you a good idea which one.

Replacing both will cost you around $150 per side, for a total of around $300 (unless you go to the dealer and use dealer parts).

I took my 2000 Mercury Cougar to a local lube shop to get an oil change and basic tune-up done on it, and they called me while they were working on it to say that my outer tie rod ends and sway bar links were completely shot, and that if I didn't get them repaired, it could put my passengers and me at serious risk. He quoted me $567 for the parts and labor.

I know most suspension work can be done on your own if you have the time and tools to do it, so I said no, but now I notice that my car doesn't handle nearly as well as it used to. I'm beginning to get real worried to drive my car anymore. I have a friend who has a HUGE amount of tools left from his grandfather who used to be a mechanic. Is this something that I can do myself? I really don't wanna pay $567 for something that I can do myself, and get the parts on my own. Can I find out how to do this from a Chilton manual, or can someone show me a website with pictures or a video, if it can be done on my own?Can I replace my own outer tie rods and sway bar link?
I can't link you to it anymore, but the autozone.com website has a repair guide for your car. It has all the info a Chilton's manual would have on these procedures.

Go there and register. Select your vehicle info for the profile. Click %26quot;repair info%26quot;, then %26quot;view repair guides%26quot;.

For the tie rods, go to %26quot;steering%26quot; then %26quot;steering linkage%26quot;. You can use a regular pickle fork (of the right size of course) for them instead of the puller they show, since you are replacing them.

For the stabilizer bar links, go to %26quot;suspension%26quot;, then %26quot;front suspension%26quot;, then %26quot;stabilizer bar (sway bar) %26amp; links%26quot;.

You will need to have your toe setting checked on an alignment rack, no matter how carefully you measure them going back on, but it will help to make the trip to the mechanic easier if you count the turns.

The parts from Autozone are $69, and alignment will run you $50 to $100, depending on labor rates and if you shop around. $22 and $24 for the tie rods respectively, and $11.50 each for the stabilizer links. Can I replace my own outer tie rods and sway bar link?
get the chilton book/swaybar links are easy/the tierod ends have to be right and left and you have to count the turns when removing to get back to right toe settings/get sears to quote/see what they say/you dont need front end align with this but you do need wheel align-(toe-in toe-out)Can I replace my own outer tie rods and sway bar link?
yes you can replace them on your own but as you mentioned you need the right toolsCan I replace my own outer tie rods and sway bar link?
if you decide to do the job ,just be sure you count the turns when removing the tie rods .down the road you'll need a front end alignment .Can I replace my own outer tie rods and sway bar link?
    sure not real hard

outer tie rods you can change yourself but the inner ones takes a special tool to reach up in the rack and as for the sway bar links you can change them yourself too. on the tie rods all you do is loosen the jam nut, run it back up on the tie rod finger tight, separate the tie rod with a crows foot and turn the tie rod off and run the new 1 back on until you reach the jam nut. tighten the jam nut and install the tie rod on the steering knuckle. i changed a lot of them. Can I replace my own outer tie rods and sway bar link?

Of course you can do the work on your own if you have the proper tools and know-how. Your best bet is to have a friend help and then above all else my friend, work safely and remember to have an alignment done asap after the work is done to complete the job and to keep you, your family and friends safe. For more detail on just what to do, go to your local auto parts store and purchase a repair manual or go to the library and check out the manual you will need. Good luck and definitely get the work done yourself. Can I replace my own outer tie rods and sway bar link?
You should also get a second opinion to find out if they are actually worn out. Shops telling novice customers this story is unfortunatly very common because most folks aren't able to offer any retort. I would take it to another shop for another free quote first.

    WTF? Tie Rods?

I had an oil change and the guy told me that I needed to have one of my tie rods replaced and wasn't at ALL helpful... so, how serious is this? Do I need to have BOTH done at the same time or can I just get the one done first, then the other later? After it's done, do I need to have the wheels aligned as well? Help! I'm just a girl with NO knowledge of cars...WTF? Tie Rods?
Usually you can get away with just doing one side and doing the other later but if it was my car i would just do them both because it would be advisable to align it afterward but i have done them by eye b4 with minimal tire wear issues. In terms of seriousness it should be done pretty soon because if it breaks then you won't be able to steer... not fun at 65 mph.WTF? Tie Rods?
the tie rods connect the steering to the wheels in a manner.depending on the type of steering you could have four tie rod ends. but many cars have changed over to t rack and pinion type that only uses two. if you have a problem with one, i would replace them both at the same time. you will need to get the alignment checked immediately afterwards.WTF? Tie Rods?
a tie rod keeps the front wheel aiming where you want it to, if its loose or sloppy, your tire will wear out quickly and the car will not handle as good as it should. Get it replaced, an alignment is usually included when you have this replaced, but ask to make sure when you get it replaced...... And yes, it is something you should have fixedWTF? Tie Rods?
some things to help you out. look at your front wheels, look closely at each one. does only one look like it's wearing out faster than the other? this is a sign of a loose tie rod. usually the car will vibrate when driving, and the steering wheel will feel loose. In this instance yes replace both tie rods, and you gotta do an alignment.WTF? Tie Rods?
Take it to an alignment tech. He will do a thorough inspecttion. He will replace the one, and only replace the other if it is getting close to worn, then he will align your car.

The inspections done at oil change time are quick, but they are a helpful indicator of problems that need to be attended to.

How do you fix a loose steering wheel?

i've had a loose steering wheel for a while. When driving down the road i have to keep moving the steering wheel slightly from side to side to go straight. i was told to change all these parts. I just had the steering box, tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm and ball joints replaced. After everything was done, i got an alignment, but i still have the same problem. what could be the problem???? any help will be very useful. How do you fix a loose steering wheel?
Smith sounds about right. I would check the air pressure in the tires as well, (do it yourself) that will make allot of difference if they are under pressure and they may not look it. There is also a nut and bolt on the top of older cars (i'm not sure if the new ones still have it) steering box that will take out excess slack in side to side movement in steering. But you need someone who knows what he is doing and someone you trust. Machanics take advantage of people every day, espeailly WOMEN.How do you fix a loose steering wheel?
huh - maybe where the steering column connects to the steering box is messed up? Maybe just down by the brake pedal? How do you fix a loose steering wheel?
or it might also be your allignment

    or even your tires

but i think its most likely steering wheel or allignment

You need to adjust the steering box for tightnessHow do you fix a loose steering wheel?
It sounds like either you need a sportier car or a smaller steering wheel (an aftermarket one, but that would normally require removing your air bag)

Loose steering wheels are inherent in some cars that are deemed as family sedans. If you drive a luxery family sedan, you're even more out of luck.

If you've replaced all that stuff and the steering still feels loose, I'd say it really doesn't get any better. How do you fix a loose steering wheel?

in a lot of older cars the steering is loose. what year/make car do you have? check the power steering fluid and belt. if your father or friend knows about cars get one of them to look at it. but if it's an older car it's just going to have loose steering.

Hyundai Bad service and still no response from company. kindly help me?

Can anyone help me solve my problem. i emailed this to hyundai company and still got no response from them. The complaint was done on 12 oct 09

    hello

I am the owner of Santro HR51 Z 1838. The car was bought from Baltic

Hyundai , Faridabad, Haryana. I bought this vehicle on 26 june 2007.

The car was duly serviced from the showroom ( the authorised service

    centre) .

The car steering was creating problem since the car had done 12588 kms

on 8 Oct 08.The car was sent to showroom and they changed the ball

joint assy, after 2 days the car was again sent to them as the problem

was felt,so they changed the end assy tie rod.. After that their was

no noise from the steering. The car was again brought to them at

regular service at 14643kms and at 18979 kms. The cars steering was

again found noisy and unusually hard (at 21665 kms ) and it was

brought to them and they said that the cars full steering has to be

replaced and that would cost around 19000 rs. I hope you are now clear

with what happened with the vehicle.

I want to ask you that is the life of hyundai car parts just approx 21665 kms. ?

Is the customer required to pay approx 20,000 rs for spare parts and

wear and tear for every 20,000 kms i.e re 1/km?

I have been finding this problem for some time but it was not much so

that i could appreciate that , since i am not a technical person, but

when i found it to be very hard i brought it to their notice. This

defect was pointed out to the technical people in last services at

14643 kms on 5 march'09 and also on 3 aug 09 at 18979kms also but

they didnt bother about it and told me that it is alright and has no

defect. So i mean to say that the defect arose in just 9000kms or

2000kms . I am surprised that how can they tell me about it to be ok

when it is creating so much problem to the extent that it is creating

noise. I think that first the steering was a little hard which was

unnoticed by the service personel and then when the wear and tear

    continued it started creating noise.

I am surprised to say that the technical people or the mechanics at

this showroom dont or didnt pay attention to this vehicle. When i took

the delivery of the car on 8 th oct 08 i was told that it is perfect

now and after two dand just after 2 kms i am able to detect the

defect and point out but not the technical people and mechanics who

deliver the vehicle after duly checking it.After two days the end assy

tie rod was replaced.I hope i am clear in my words and explanation.

I have just bought a hyundai i-10 HR51 AF 2268.I really loved the

performance of santro and the built quality so opted for another i -

    10. I even suggested my other friends and realtives about buying

hyundai vehicle instead of maruti which has very poor quality cars.I

found this because i have used and still now bearing with maruti

product. But i faced a problem in my swift ldi. The alternator had

failed and they replaced it free of cost as the car was under warranty

but they ignored the outside fitment work which i had done in my car

which was a valid reason to cancel the warranty.

i hope that if this happens with any customer then he would have to

think twice before buying a hyundai product next time. What

explanation would i give to my friends and colleagues whom i have

advised to buy hyundai products if i am myself facing it.

It does not behove for a company like hyundai to neglect the defect

pointed out repeatedly and ask for charges for repair after the

    warranty period is over.

I hope you will take an urgent action in the matter and inform me

immediatly so that i can get the vehicle repaired. I am not driving

this vehicle since it may not create further problems.

Dr GoelHyundai Bad service and still no response from company. kindly help me?
I don't know where you have complained about your problem. If you've done it just at a dealership level, I would recommend you to escalate complaint to Hyundai in your country of origin. In Canada, such things are not happening. Assuming there will be an exception, if the manufacturer in Canada will be notified of a complaint like this, they will definitely step forward to help customer. Here in Canada we have good will budgets for situations like this.

One thing I don't understand. You said that the car has just a little over 20.000 km on board and its an 07 model. Why is this still not covered under the manufacturer warranty? You bought the car in June of 07. Hyundai should have at least 3 years warranty (at least outside North American Continent where warranty is min. 5 years)

  • How to repay an act of kindness,?

The company I work for was sold the new owner saw my car was in desperate need of repairs, he told me to give him my keys so I did and he drove off with my car. He returned at the end of the day and had done about $1,000 worth of repairs, new tires, front end alignment and new tie rod ends, even an oil change. I asked him how much it would cost me. He said $0.00. I have never experianced such an act of kindness before. What do you get someone who already has anything they want? How to repay an act of kindness,?
As a hurricane Katrina survivor down here in New Orleans (I lost my downstairs), I had been online ranting about how FEMA said I didn't have enough damage so I was receiving no assistance, but yet someone with no damage received several thousand dollars. I recevied an email from a total stranger asking me what I needed. I said %26quot;prayers and positive thoughts%26quot;.. They asked how my kitchen looked and I responded with the fact that I lost the kitchen and everything in it.

The next day I had an email with a link to sears.com and was told to pick a stove. I did. This total stranger bought me a brand new stove to replace the one I lost.

Here is how I repaid that stranger. I sent an email to them thanking them, and expressed how much it meant to me that someone who I didn't really know cared enough to offer such an expensive gift, and then I 'paid it forward%26quot;.. I didn't have the money due to recovery work to financially pay it forward, but I went out and helped several elderly people gut their homes and helped others clean up their property.

So my advice would be to give that person a thank you card, say thank you again to them personally, and then when you are financially on your feet, pay it forward.

I agree. Pay it forward. Buy a very nice %26quot;thank you%26quot; card for your boss, and in the card, explain to him that since he said you don't owe him anything, you're going to %26quot;pay it forward%26quot; and help someone in need.

Or perhaps you can ask him what his favorite charity is, and make a donation to it in his name, and then give him the receipt in a nice thank you card. I get the feeling that a simple thankyou will do for this guy. Like others have said already, He is investing in you as an employee. But He's the kind of guy that likes to help others. If your job has low pay and could be done by any gorilla with two arms and a pulse, then it's a big deal and deserves a thank you letter.

If you are skilled labour or your job requires a lot of training, he's buying loyalty and goodwill from an employee. Some might call it brownnosing, some (me) might call it good business. Replacing and retraining good employees is expensive. And even if this is the case, send him a thank you note anyway. How to repay an act of kindness,?
I recommend setting up a scheme of 'kindness points' - you award points for acts of kindness and when a person has accumulated enough points, they can redeem the points. Of course you would have to monitor it carefully to ensure there was no cheating but I'm sure that could be done. How to repay an act of kindness,?
NO!! to get someone something for their act of kindness is a big mistake, you would be putting a value on it, and therefore dismissing it.

Smile, be happy, and do your best for your new boss.

HE doesn't need anything except your loyalty, perform your own act of kindness for someone who needs it, therefore making the whole world happy ;)

PS. Does your boss fancy you? :PHow to repay an act of kindness,?
Your loyalty to the companies success and a really nice card. How to repay an act of kindness,?
    You say %26quot;Thank you%26quot;

You dont have to repay kindness. He/She did not do it to be awarded a gift. How to repay an act of kindness,?
Repay the new owner in kindness maybe take him to

No that is not true. Take off the caliper and rotor, then the assembly unbolts from the steering knuckle. You would only have to mess with the ball joint and tie rod if it was pressed into the knuckle. How do i change a hub assembly on a 93 plymouth voyager?
Get yourself a Haynes or Chilton manual and it will explain exactly how to do it.

Do you have to grease new Moog tie rod ends?

Actually, they were Chinese knockoffs of Moog, but came with a grease fitting which we installed (just like the real Moogs). I was shocked to see that grease fittings were included in the pack, because everything has been sealed for so long. I thought I could get them greased at Sears when I took it in for an alignment, but Sears said they don't even have a grease gun anymore. Do these really need grease? How soon do I have to have it done? Can I wait until my next oil change?Do you have to grease new Moog tie rod ends?
they have a very small amount of lube in them already, but you should grease them before driving the car for too long. I'de say as a safte precaution you should grease them. They do some with some grease in them, but most of the time its a very minimal amount. What i usually do after putting new tie rod ends on, i grease them initially, then every other oil change just check them and add any grease if necessary. They can move freely when the wieght of the vehicle is lifted, but as soon as wieght it put on, without proper greasing they can and have been known to bind up, which ive witnessed a few times.Do you have to grease new Moog tie rod ends?
whenever replacing tie rod end that come with grease fittings grease them. The manufacturer only pre-lube them enough to keep moister out for shipping purposes.Buy yourself a cheap grease gun and grease them yourself it will be cheaper.

I went to Firestone to get an alignment done because my 94 ford escort pulls really hard to the right. They said that my left front outer tie-rod was loose and that that was the problem and doing an alignment wouldn't help. HI

A tie rod is what steers the tires. If it lose he didn't mean that the nut is lose (as the nut has a carter pin through it ) he means that its shot and wore out.

As for urgent .... if it breaks you won't be going anywhere and it may cause you to crash if your driving it.. as when it brakes that one tire will turn all the way out or in and you won't have any control over the car.

    good luck

timWhat is an outer tie-rod? How urgent is fixing it if it%26039;s loose?
this is something that can be aken care of without lifting the vehicle. the tie rods are very important. they are what in a sense %26quot; tie your hub assembly into your vehicle.%26quot; in the unfortunate case that it was to brea it would kick your %26quot;tire%26quot; in a direction that you really dont want it to go. if your going to replace it you need to treat it like a headlight or brake pads or wheel bearings and just do them al at the same time. keeps it simple. if your friends uncle is a mechanic he should be able to do this for you pretty easily. if he is willing. there are some little quirks however about tie rods that can really stress you out. you need to look up your vehicles specs on the computer and find out what you need. or give your local dealership a call, have the last eight digits of your vin number handy. they will need it. have them tell you the parts involved in your tie rods. then just call your local auto parts store with the information and you will more than likely save more.... HOWEVER!!!! you need to know that tie rods dont just go out. did you hit someting hard? a curb or something? that would do it. anyhow. if you have been driving around like this for a while it may not hurt to continue untill you can get the money saved. but you definitely want to put this in the top of your list to get done. it could be a dangeerous thing if they brokeWhat is an outer tie-rod? The tie-rod END is probably what he %26quot;said%26quot; or %26quot;meant%26quot;. That's a very easy replacement. If that price is all inclusive; alignment, tie-rod end, and labor, go for it. If not, get your friend's uncle to do it, if he can. Then go get your alignment.

How do i change the differential in my 1990 Corolla?

    1990 Corolla.

Was drained when I filled it up with 80W90 gear oil.

    Auto transmission.

    US calif. Model. 4AFE engine.

I think something gave way inside(probably a tooth on one of the gears). It starts rolling, I hear a loud crack, and the left wheel shakes.

It started doing it when it turned only, now it does it going straight too.

CV joints are new and OK.

    Tie rods Ok(new)

    Steering perfect.

Brakes perfect( new caliper) New pads.

Auto transmission: new filter and fluid. Seems to work smooth( Then again, I have never seen what a broken down auto transmission feels like; anyone knows the symptoms of a faulty transission?)

My diagnosis is that my problem is the differantial, but i do not even know if i can just replace the differential alone(it is front wheel drive) or if it is part of the auto transmission.

ps. I have both Chiltons AND Haynes repair manuals, but neither talk .... about the differential. They go off track talking about the all wheel drive wagon transfer case. How do i change the differential in my 1990 Corolla?
I'm a little skeptical, %26quot;a loud crack%26quot; doesn't quite do it for me. I would inspect the suspension and CV joints again.

However, the car is a front wheel drive so the differential should allow slippage as the wheels turn. Fast repetitive slippage and seizing could possibly cause the wheel to shake. 80W90 does sound a little light, I would have guessed 85 or even 90 weight oil do to the direct connection to the transmission. The differential should be bolted on to the bellhousing, so you should be able to remove it without the transmission but I wouldn't know for sure without looking at it. I suggest removing the differential cover and checking the gear teeth for wear or any metal loose pieces of metal (there should be a magnet at the bottom that collects these). A bad transmission wouldn't cause the symptoms your describing. Normally when an automatic transmission fails it tends to burn fluid, slip, shift really rough, sick in one gear, not go forward or not go into reverse, hell I've even seen cause the engine to die out. You might be able to find one in the junkyard.

Anyway, good luck with that, I hope you figure it out and get it resolved. I'm curious to know what it is.

Help with Bearings Ball joints and tie rod for escalade?

I had a bump in my 04 ESV and was getting the Stability control message. Today I went to the dealer and they told me the front bearings were very loose. Left upper and lower ball joints are loose. Right front inner tie rod end is loose and boot is torn. They quoted 1708 for parts and 1162 for labour total with tax 3330$. I found parts cheaper from part source and on ebay but wondered if it is difficult to change this myself.

Any help would be great some instruction how to change these parts.

    Thanks for any help.

I'll second Richards response! This is not a job you want to tackle. There are specialty tools required and an alignment needs to be done after the parts are replaced. The dealer quote seems really high to me as well. Try to find a reputable independent shop and have them inspect the vehicle and give you an estimate. Don't tell them what the dealer told you or found. See if they find and recommend the same items be replaced. You should also have them show you the parts and explain why they are bad. You do need to be prepared to pay them for their time in inspecting your vehicle and writing an estimate if you do not have them do the repairs.Help with Bearings Ball joints and tie rod for escalade?

Easy for some, difficult for others. Buy yourself a shop manual or a Haines Manual. It will help you step by step. Hope you also have the necessary tools.Help with Bearings Ball joints and tie rod for escalade?
Not to be an *** here, but if you had to ask that question, you probably shouldn't. Unless you have a friend who is a whiz at mechanical things.Help with Bearings Ball joints and tie rod for escalade?
You said front bearings are very loose, these are sealed bearings and require a press to change them. Inner tie rod bad, can be removed by striking the mount collar hard or a fork splitter. Ball joints require a ball joint press to remove and install them and an alignment should be done when all parts are replaced. These are not the usual back yard mechanic type repairs. Speciality tools are required and I doubt that you have them. The cost you mentioned is high, suggest you get another estimate from an independent shop.

I have removed the axle nut and tie rod. There is not enough room to remove the old alxe. Do I need to compress the spring and completely remove the wheel hub and all?How to change the driver transaxle on a 1988 Nissan Maxima?
you need to undo the ball joint from the spindle also.what i usually do is take off the ball joint nut and then hit the spindle in the area where its connected to the ball joint with a 5lb hammer.that usually loosens up the connection between the two.then use a long bar between the k-frame and the lower a-frame and push down to seperate the two.now the axle is probably not gonna just pull out easily.but after some tugging on it,it will come out of the tranny. How to change the driver transaxle on a 1988 Nissan Maxima?
you need to seperate the lower ball joint to get enough room to get it out. i did one just 4 days ago on a prism. i had a little fun because the inner universal was stuck in the transmission it self. after that was out, no problem

  • How much would these repairs cost for a 2000 honda civic?

I was told that I need Front brakes, transmission fluid changed and Left Outer Tie Rod End.... now my guess is the brakes are the bulk of the charge... i was told $400-$500. thanks ohh and i have about 113200 miles on my car and its starting to burn oil.. thanks to all for answersHow much would these repairs cost for a 2000 honda civic?
That sounds about right for now adays prices...I would call Midas or Meineke, they do all those things and usually offer a better price, only thing is on the breaks they use really cheap ones I would ask for Ceramic Breaks if you can afford it they usually only cost $20.00 more and they last longer put out less dust and just generally work better than the cheap ones, unlessw you plan on selling the car in the next six months. How much would these repairs cost for a 2000 honda civic?
Thats a little higher than average. But like someone else said, $300 would be more realistic, especially for a shop that does brakes all day. It's an easy task for them. And your car is actually simple enough already to work on brakes. You should look into doing it yourself if youre capable. And the transmission fluid change is just that, draining the old fluid, putting the new fluid in. The tie rod is simple as well, remove a cotter pin, and a castle nut, unscrewing the tie rod, and installing in reverse order. Then the alignment will be from $50-$100 depending on where you go. If you have a firestone, go there. They have a great deal, it's lifetime alignment for the time you own your car. It runs $129-$179, but you will never have to pay for alignment again as long as you own your car. Its a great deal though. But do a little calling around and find a few different places and go with the best (not cheapest). Dont just look at price. You dont wanna pay $50 for a $300 and be driving down the freeway and your brakes fail. Find a reputable repair shop and try to work a good deal out with them. Most privately owned shops will work with you a better price. How much would these repairs cost for a 2000 honda civic?
Well you must need a complete front brake job if the cost is that high.If you went to the dealer for your brakes that too is possible. Also if you live in one of the northern states. Down here in Arkansas the average cost for a complete front brake job...to wit ...Brake pads new rotors new calipers Bleed and flush complete brake system...Cost around $300.00 The outer tie rod cost is not much but the alignment 4 wheels is around $80.00a transmission drain and fill...By the way that Honda has a drain plug on the transmission just like the oil pan on the engine. Make sure they drain the RIGHT fluid!! that cost around $30.00For better results and gas mileage switch to SYNTHETIC oil. It doesn%26quot;t burn.Brake parts Recommend WAGNER BRAND.

1984 Toyota PIckup - how to remove tie rods to get to oil pan?

I have a 1984 toyota pick up and we are trying to change the oil pan gasket but we are having trouble getting the tie rods of to get to it. I read somewhere that you need a tie-rod-end puller or a two-jaw unit. What is this used for? Never messed with tie rods before so I want to make sure I dont mess the truck up but I NEED to change that gasket. Let me know if you can give me some advise I can even take pictures if you would like. Thanks!1984 Toyota PIckup - how to remove tie rods to get to oil pan?
The first thing you need to do is stop by your local auto parts store and pic up the repair manual for your toyota.

Then, read up on the repair. Buy, borrow or rent the tools you need to remove the oil pan and get to work.1984 Toyota PIckup - how to remove tie rods to get to oil pan?
%26quot;If you've never it before or seen it done get it to a shop or see if you know some one that has had pulled and replaced tie-rods before!%26quot; after you get this done you're going to have to have the alignment checked.1984 Toyota PIckup - how to remove tie rods to get to oil pan?
Here is a link to a manual for an 85 (same as 84 for that stuff). right click and save it, hope you aren't on dialup! LOL

I have a local parts store that rents the tools for the tie rods. You leave a deposit and then get every penny back when you are done. The even told me that if I break the tool thats no problem. Don't get the pickle fork, that might damage the tie rod ends, make sure it's the puller that you have to tighten down to pop them off.

The best stuff I've used for that oil pan is the Toyota FIPG gasket maker. It's a tube of RTV type stuff and works great at sealing up that oil pan. They sell it at the dealer for like $5.

Complete loss of acceleration, now won't start - Pls Help!?

So my mom went into the hospital and my car broke in the same day. Not a good day, but I'm not saying this because I'm looking for sympathy. I don't want to make anyone sad for me, but ... Despite the fact that I usually do these things when researching anything, I haven't researched this topic prior to this post and I'm worried that something might be quite nonsensical in here. I apologize in advance, but I'm just sooooo tired right now.

    Please Help.

I was driving, getting a burger while my mom was getting a test done, then decided I really needed to get gas. I couldn't tell how low I was because the needle position varies significantly depending on the slope direction and I was driving on a series of hilly road, but I was really low.

So, I pulled into a gas station that I never go to because I'm just never in that area. I got gas, about a half a tank (don't know if that matters) and drive away. Keep in mind my car was driving absolutely perfect up until this point. I get about three blocks away (.5-1 mile maybe - I'm bad with guessing distances) and the accelerator (which my foot is on of course) falls to the floor. I pumped it and it went back to the floor. Luckily I had a parking area to pull into, but by this time I have no 'gas' or power anything - the brakes and steering wheel feel stiff. I turn off the car and it won't turn back on. It's been pushed to the side of the lot with the hope that it won't get towed before I decide what to do with it. It does try to turn on. Makes a noise like it's not getting gas???

So ... any ideas what's going on? Is it something an amatuer could fix without special tools? I mostly changed my tie rod ends on a ford tempo I had once. Had some help from someone stronger than me. I can figure out mechanic things, but strength and tools might be an issue. Or would it be best to find a mechanic and hope I don't get ripped off? But really anything to shed light on this problem will be helpful - personal advice, links, whatever else you know of. I'd usually dig deeper myself, but ... you know.

But at least I have my mom's car to drive in the mean time.

Thanks. (and it's a '93 Chevy Lumina in case you need to know)Complete loss of acceleration, now won%26039;t start - Pls Help!?
could be a clogged pump pick up screen or a clogged fuel filter. could even be the pump. but i would check to see if you have gotten water in your gas that will make em quit every time.

1996 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd Truck Front end problems.. Any ideas?

So.. I've had this recurring problem with my truck. The front idler arm(steering link opposite the steering box attached to the frame) despite how many times I change it still has play in it. And the play in it causes a shimmy whenever I come to a stop which you can feel throughout the whole truck. I swear I've chagd the idler arm at least 4 times. Everytime getting an alignmet done afterwards. I've changed Outer tie rods, Inner tie rods.. And everytime it does it for a while, it ends up warping the passenger side brake rotor. It's too the point now where I've just given up. Let me add.. The truck does have a lift on it, but it did it even before I had the lift on it. Any ideas? Someone told me it may all be because of defective parts. But I've got idler arms from Kragen's, Auto Zone, NAPA,.. Any help would be great...1996 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd Truck Front end problems.. Any ideas?
the only thing that will really warp rotors are bad calipers or a restriction in the brake line not allowing the back pressure to release on it,or someone riding the brakes all the time, you may have dirt in the line or have a line collapsing on it causing this too happen,if you really take your time with it and start looking you,ll figure it out,a bad proportioning valve will also cause this too happen, good luck with it.1996 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd Truck Front end problems.. Any ideas?
Im sorry but that did not warp your brake rotor , you may have a sticking caliper or collapsed rubber brake line but the idler arm did not cause your rotor to warp and the warped rotor is probably the shimmy you feel when stopping Well it is rubber under neath that steel braiding and it may be collapsed enough to not let the calliper release enough all the time

Bad tie rod on a 2000 Dodge Caravan?

We went for an oil change for our 2000 caravan recently, which had just over 90,000 miles, and the guys said that the left front tire has a bad tie rod.Is it abnormal for a tie rod to go bad before 100,000 miles? Is it worth fixing because on Wednesday or Thursday, we are getting a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan SE brand new. And how much do you think replacing it will costt?Bad tie rod on a 2000 Dodge Caravan?
no that's not uncommon at all on those vans, i see them with way less miles than that with bad tie rod ends and bad ball joints,as well as bad rack and pinion units on them, your looking at around 225 bucks to get one put on it and get the front end re-aligned back up right, and that's if they don't find anything else loose on it,the last one i did we replaced both outer tie rod ends on it because the other one didn't look so good either,so this might be something you want to consider doing,it may save problems from happening on down the road at another time, good luck with it.Bad tie rod on a 2000 Dodge Caravan?
id tell the people that bought it that it needed a tie rod end so they can get it repaired, this way it wont fall out on them, good luck selling it,its hard to sell anything right now,it should bring 2k real easy though.

probably about two hundred dollars, for parts and labor. It is not unusual for them to wear out at 90,000 miles.Bad tie rod on a 2000 Dodge Caravan?
depends if its the inner or outer tierod end, the outer can be replaced in minutes. the inner takes a little longer but both are cheap to rep[lace. a good mechanic could replace it without the need for a alignment. 10.00 to 15.00 dollar part, 20.00 to 30.00 laborBad tie rod on a 2000 Dodge Caravan?
It's not like a banana going stale in a period of time. There is history. This bad tierod has had its punishment, unique to the travels of one particular vehicle. If it is worn out, that's it and you can't explain it into being good again.

If you have bad roads and drive hard, you can ruin a tie rod in less miles than that. If it lost its lubrication wear is much quicker as well.

The left front suspension has a bad tie rod, not the tire has a bad tie rod. Get a second opinion from a different mechanic.Bad tie rod on a 2000 Dodge Caravan?

    WV tie rod worn out?

I took my car to a shop, had them change 2 tires, now my car is super loud, my friend told me it might be the bearings or the fact that they didnt balance it after they changed my tire. The tire shop, says i need a new tie rod, which i will happily change but why all of a sudden, did my tires start to get so loud after the fact i changed my tires there? i'm no genuis but i know how to change tires, and it shouldnt have been a problem at all. help, are they trying to scam.WV tie rod worn out?
Easy enough to check out. Jack up the front of the car, have someone hold the tire on one side while you try and turn the wheels back and forth by moving the other one. If there's any play you need a tie rod end, if not you don't. Excess play can also come from a worn steering or idler arm too. VW front ends are pretty simple won't take but a couple minutes and a good flashlight to spot any weak links.

Sometimes a different tread pattern will make more noise than another. Also if the noise increases when turning one way or another you could have a bad wheel bearing.WV tie rod worn out?
You do not state if the tires are new. If they are not it is possible that they are cupped from the previous vehicle. Also if you are using a snow tire with a more aggressive tread pattern then the noise will increase quite a bit. Tire balance usually manifests itself as a vibration rather than a noise. The tie rod story does not wash for tire noise, that usually shows up as a %26quot;wandering%26quot; condition while trying to maintain straight ahead driving. I would be looking in the area of tread pattern as being the cause.WV tie rod worn out?

Your question does not make a lot of sense...putting or exchanging tires will not make noise.......no front end parts are touched when tires are changed....what gives here???

I'm sorry to inform you that you WILL NOT be able to repair this yourself, due to the fact that removal and installation requires use of a special inner tie rod socket dedicated specifically for this repair. You will also need to have a front end alignment done once the part is installed.I have a for taurus se,and the inner tie rod broke off.i have the part and need to know how to change it.?
Tie rods aren't that difficult to replace. Providing you can get hold of any special tooling you may need. You just need to look at the assembly really well, and get a good idea of what it looks like before you start. You will need a good socket set, and maybe a set of box end wrenches, a couple of sturdy flat balde screwdrivers, a pair of large pliers, or two, a hammer, a roll of string, and a couple of jack stands. A creeper would be good for rolling in and out from under the car, too.

Jack the front of the car up, and secure it with the jack stands. Locate the broken part, and remove it. There may be some washers bent up against the sides of the bolts holding the tie rod ends on, so use the screwdrivers to pry them away from the bolts. Flatten them out the best you can with the pliers. Remove the bolts, and tap the ends out with the hammer. Replace the parts with the new ones, and adjust the tie rod ends to align the front wheels with the back ones using the string. Stretch the string from the back tires ( get someone to help hold the string at the back tires) to the front tires. Set the steering wheel straight, and climb back under the car. Turn the tie rod adjusters untill the front tires are as straight in line with the back tires as you can. You can tell they are straight when the string touches the outsides of the tires both front and back. There shouldn't be any gaps on either tire.Tighten up all the bolts, and take it to be professionally aligned. Otherwise you will wear out your tires. The string method works good enough to get you to the mechanic's. I can't think of anything else, but you may want to get a Clymer, or a Haynes manual for the car that have some pictures to help you, and a bit more of a detailed instruction.

thanksHow much to raplace all four tie rods + one cv axle boot+ two new tires+ bushings?
If you want to DIY the tie rod ends, tires and the exhaust are the most critical. Followed closely by the suspension bushings. Sway bar links / bushings are less critical as long as you are not into performance driving. You need to have the toe set after replacing the tie rod ends or you will destroy your tires in no time. E brake cable will self destruct soon unless properly rerouted. Oil leak is major if loosing more than 1 Qt / 1000 miles.

Doing the front end work piecemeal will probably triple the cost of doing it all at once.

On any major repair I recommend that you get 3 or 4 estimates from local service facilities unless you are lucky enough to have a shop with an absolutely stellar reputation available. Compare the estimates and choose one of the middle estimates. My reasoning for this is the low estimate either left something out or worse is deliberately giving a low ball estimate to get you in and then when your car is all torn apart they find all sorts of critically important things wrong with it which run your bill through the roof. Do the leg work and be an informed car owner. No reliable technician or shop will give an estimate for repair site unseen except as a budgetary estimate which will be a range from the middle average to the unusual high end possible. How much to raplace all four tie rods + one cv axle boot+ two new tires+ bushings?
Buy a Chilton or Haynes book for your car. We'd be hear all night giving you accurate step by step answers. fix front end all at once or you ll screw up all the new parts you just put in - jcw.com - pickle fork ( that's a tool ) you need that with a hammer - ball joints most like riveted on ( grind off ) you need a grinder for that - but they do bolt on - all parts $750 about - then wheel alignment

there are no upper and lower tie rods. the outer tie rod ends can be replaced using 1 or 2 wrenches, wire cutters to remove and install cotter pins, a good size hammer to release the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle. on your rack %26amp; pinion steering system, typically you would need and inner tie rod socket removal and installation tool although if access allows, you could remove and install inner tie rod sockets with a large wrench or large crescent wrench. How do repair a Suzuki Swift%26039;s tie rods?
Know what you doing and all the safety aspects:

Get a manual, get all the right tools for the jobs, and then take it to have the tracking done in a workshop after you have completed the work.

I suspect that if you don't have all the above and you are doing it as a cost saving then that will not be the case in the short term.

But in any case it could be A CV JOINT FROM THE DESCRIPTION !

As the 1st post said, tie rods do not make noise in turns. CV Joints do and knowing these cars you better have a shop do it since the joints will be very very tight in the transmission.

ive changed a track rod end before but never the whole bar to the steering rack.

when i jack it up and get underneath it, what am i expecting to see and how do remove it from the steering rack?

    any help would be great

thank you as always for your time

Suggest that it is usually free to have a pro look at it. I am astounded the person performing the alignment did not notice any problems.I change my rack pinion like a month ago! My question is how would I know if my tie rod are bad? Because since?

If what your talking about is the jam washer, that is hammered out of the way and then the inner tie-rod tool will work. How do i take the inner tie rod on a sentra 03 ?
Lol ball joint puller for an inner tie rod rotflmao. This is what you do, jack the vehicle up, remove tire, take wrench and just bust the lock nut loose between the inner and outer tie rods, remove the cotter pin in the outer tie rod, remove the nut, smack hub/spindle with hammer, remove outer tie rod completely, remove lock nut off inner tie rod, remove clamps that hold bellows boot on, remove bellows boot, bend the tab as the first poster stated, then use inner tie rod tool to remove tie rod from rack and pinion. Thread new inner tie rod on , tighten with tool, bend lock tab/washer down, reverse procedure on the rest counting threads. When done, head to an alignment shop for a four wheel alignment.

First and foremost, you will need an inner tie rod tool. Some vehicles can be done without it, but you'll save yourself a world of heartache if you have one. Most auto parts stores have it.

    1) Turn steering wheel so the tie rod you want to replace is fully extended.

    2) Chock rear wheels. (Sounds dumb, but very important)

    3) Raise vehicle and remove wheel.

    4) Remove nut on outer tier rod end.

    5) Loosen jam nut between the outer tie rod end and inner tie rod.

    6) Hit the steering knuckle with a hammer until the outer tie rod breaks free from it, or you can use a puller, we usually hit the knuckle in the shop though. (Don't be afraid to hit it hard)

    7) Unscrew the outer tie rod from the inner, count how many turns it took to remove it, and remember this number. Write it down.

    8) Remove bellows boot. (The accordian rubber cover)

    9) Use inner tie rod tool, or very large pliers, or whatever you need to, to unscrew the inner tie rod from the rack and pinion. This will not be easy to start, but once it starts, it should come off freely.

    10) Install in reverse of removal.

Put some threadlock on the new inner tie rod to keep it from backing off in the future.

When you install the outer tie rod, put it on the same number of turns it took to remove it, this won't be perfect, but it should get you to get it aligned.

YOU MUST GET AN ALIGNMENT NO EXCEPTIONS

  • How do i replace tie rods fro my 92 honda civic dx?

i have had so many problems with my car for the last month that i am in debt up to my neck. so i want to try and change my tie rods myself to try and save money.

i need to find out how to change/replace inner tie rods for a 92 honda civic dx in as much detail as possible (pictures would help)How do i replace tie rods fro my 92 honda civic dx?
Not hard at all. I just put an inner tie rod end on my '94 Civic DX last week. I bought my mine from this seller on eBay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-Inner-T

Two tie rod ends for $26 shipped to my door...Autozone wanted $52 for one. You'll also need a new cotter pin and the minimum tools would be a pair of wire cutters, a large hammer, and two cresent wrenches.

Set your parking brake, loosen your lug nuts, and jack up that side of your car and put on jack stands. Remove the tire/wheel then remove the cotter pin from the outer tie rod end nut and the nut itself. (if you want to make the repair easier, replace the outer tie rod end at the same time) Once you have the nut off, stick something semisoft like a piece of brass, copper, hard wood, etc. over the threads on the outer tie rod end and hit with your hammer to knock it out of the spindle. If you can't find anything else, go to Home Depot and buy a copper tubing connector for $2. Once the outer tie rod end is loose push the rubber boot back to expose your inner tie rod. There is a flat spot machined in the steering rack to hold it steady and a spot machined on the inner tie rod end to use to unscrew it. With both tie rods off the car back off the jam nut and unscrew the two. Count the number of threads showing on the inner tie rod end so you can put the new one in the same distance and your alignment won't be off much...but leave the jam nut loose for now. Put some loc-tite on the new tie rod threads and screw it into the rack and then put the outer back on the spindle. Once both ends are attached, tighten the jam nut up. Don't forget the new cotter pin. Good luck! How do i replace tie rods fro my 92 honda civic dx?
You need to get yourself a repair manual, Haynes, will give you step by step instructions. You can find it at any auto parts store.
