WTF? Tie Rods?

I had an oil change and the guy told me that I needed to have one of my tie rods replaced and wasn't at ALL helpful... so, how serious is this? Do I need to have BOTH done at the same time or can I just get the one done first, then the other later? After it's done, do I need to have the wheels aligned as well? Help! I'm just a girl with NO knowledge of cars...WTF? Tie Rods?
Usually you can get away with just doing one side and doing the other later but if it was my car i would just do them both because it would be advisable to align it afterward but i have done them by eye b4 with minimal tire wear issues. In terms of seriousness it should be done pretty soon because if it breaks then you won't be able to steer... not fun at 65 mph.WTF? Tie Rods?
the tie rods connect the steering to the wheels in a manner.depending on the type of steering you could have four tie rod ends. but many cars have changed over to t rack and pinion type that only uses two. if you have a problem with one, i would replace them both at the same time. you will need to get the alignment checked immediately afterwards.WTF? Tie Rods?
a tie rod keeps the front wheel aiming where you want it to, if its loose or sloppy, your tire will wear out quickly and the car will not handle as good as it should. Get it replaced, an alignment is usually included when you have this replaced, but ask to make sure when you get it replaced...... And yes, it is something you should have fixedWTF? Tie Rods?
some things to help you out. look at your front wheels, look closely at each one. does only one look like it's wearing out faster than the other? this is a sign of a loose tie rod. usually the car will vibrate when driving, and the steering wheel will feel loose. In this instance yes replace both tie rods, and you gotta do an alignment.WTF? Tie Rods?
Take it to an alignment tech. He will do a thorough inspecttion. He will replace the one, and only replace the other if it is getting close to worn, then he will align your car.

The inspections done at oil change time are quick, but they are a helpful indicator of problems that need to be attended to.
